Guess The Airline – December 2000 answer

Every month, an airline printed advertisement, minus airline name and logo, is displayed for your guessing pleasure on Guess The Airline. The following is the answer to a previous game.

Just a few people Guessed The Airline correctly this time. A few were misleaded by some information provided in the text. Some others were clever enough to pay attention to the “main detail”. This advertisement was taken from an early 1980s issue of Fortune. Find out more… scroll down now!

Eastern Air Lines advertisement titled: 'Eastern wishes you many happy returns', from the year 1980/1981, featuring a jumping businessman at a departure lounge.

How to guess it?

No major clues to help you this time! One was particularly misleading, and it was that the mystery airline was the one that carried the most passengers in the free world. Many readers confused the notions of “most passengers carried” to “largest airline”. The largest airline “in the free world” (thus, excluding communist nations, i.e. USSR!) was indeed United Airlines, but this is not the answer we were looking for.

If you would have actually noticed the major detail… the overwhelming amount of BLUE in this ad. Look at the colors of the “scenery” elements. Everything is blue. What other airline could possibly be more “blue” than Eastern Air Lines. And for the record: Delta Air Lines stole Eastern’s title as the airline with most passengers in either domestic or international routes. British Airways, however, remains the airline with most passengers on international routes, being the so-called “World’s Favourite Airline”.
